After a long break, on December the 9 th we did another hiking trip. Because the day light is scarce during this time of the year and “winter is not like summer” we chose, as our destination, Middle Sister, which we hiked during the month of August. For my friends this trip was a good training for Aconcagua expedition (the height gain was 1400m) and an opportunity to test some energy bars. From Canmore, the access is easy and the route does not raise orientation issues or difficult steps to surpass. On the Stewart Valley the snow covered the path, so our progress over the rocks and boulders was more difficult. During a snack break, Calin had to use all his “tools” to cut a piece from then energy bar.
At the end of the valley, because the snow depth increased, we decided to continue on the right side. ![]() Despite the presence of the clouds at the beginning of the ascent, when we reached the ridge, the sky became clearer, so we were able to enjoy the scenery.
We were able to spot some ice falls on the Big Sister’s slopes. ![]() We didn’t stay long on the top because the wind significantly decreased the temperature. We scribbled few thoughts on the peak’s notebook, and we stared to descend.
![]() Back on the valley, because the snow was deposit in two layers, we unleashed few small avalanches. It took us 8 hours and 15 min to complete the trip and the temperature was around -10 C.
