Moose Mountain - an easy Saturday hike (June 23rd, 2007), about 14 Km both ways.

You can follow the road 22 X (SW Calgary) and then an unpaved road for about 7 km to the parking lot. From there you hike through the woods, the trail being wide and clear, excellent for mountain bike and trail running. The area reminds me a lot of  "Retezat" mountains from back home (Romania). We saw several other hikers, of all ages.

We couldn't have asked for a better weather, no rain at all and the clouds were there to protect us from a hot sun.

View from the saddle

There is a fire observation point on the top. The person in charge lives there during the summer months. He gets his supplies by helicopter. We stopped on its helipad for a hiker's picnic.

We have not seen any mooses on Moose Mountain but only chipmunks. We tempted them with sun flower seeds and they didn't think twice before they grabbed them.

On the way back...the weather in Calgary didn't look too "happy" but we were so lucky, we didn't get a drop of rain all day on the mountain.

Moose Mountain - the Albertan "Retezat". On the way back we stopped for a sweet treat: ice cream at Bragg Creek.
