Another race for Florin, August 11, 2007, this time it took place “at home” in Calgary, on the bike / running path along the Bow River. Initially the race supposed to be 60k long, but because a construction site, the race was shorter, having “only” 54k.In the morning, around 6 am, the fog was thick, quite unusually for Calgary and only 3C… so we wondered if it is already October and we didn’t know! There weren’t too many runners, around 40, but fine. There were few runners that only one week before finished the tough Death Race (125k) in the wilderness of Jasper NP. For them the 54k on the path was only a “warm up".

Florin’s support team was fine too. Thanks to Gelu for his support at this race, to Calin, who took a break from work to see the finish and me (Nikita) …. No 1 fan and the main sponsor. I took advantage of such a superb day and I completed the distance beside Florin, but on the bike!

I think it couldn’t have been a better day for this race. After it warmed up a little bit, it was a perfect day for running, not too hot, neither to cold. The race start was in north, from Baker Park (close to C.O.P.) and ended in south at Midnapore Lake. The path is well maintained, with the exception of a short section that is under construction. It was a pretty flat course, without to many ups and downs. The city and mountains panorama in the background was exceptionally (from some points along the path). Passing trough Fish Creek…it didn’t look anymore like being in Calgary!

The finish…Florin ran the last kilometers as Gabi Szabo, especially because other runners were closing in, but he didn’t give up!

Results: Florin was 4th over all, and 1st at his age group. The first 3 runners are “specialists” for long distance runs, one being a pro.

Finally it was a wonderful day for running that ended with some beers.

The next race, and the last one for this year: September 15, 2007 in Lethbridge.
