Shortly after our arrival in Canada, I have had the opportunity to hike Grotto Mountain. This mountain is clearly visible from Trans – Canada Highway, near Canmore. A nice view of the “target” from the top of Middle Sister.
Its name is related with the grotto that was found in 1858, by the members of Palliser expedition. Two routes lead to the top: Direct Route and Northwest Trail. The trailhead, for both routes, starts in vicinity of Alpine Club of Canada clubhouse. The first one is shorter, but steeper. It follows the right edge of the gully system that is on the southwest slope of the mountain. The second route reaches the main ridge and it continues from there on towards the top. To prevent the soil erosion due to the shortcuts, in 1995 few volunteers established a nice path on the mountain. The height gain is about 1425 m, and the rote does not raise orientation difficulties or technical problems. I hiked on Northwest Trail, enjoying the sunny weather and the awesome scenery. Because the camera’s battery died, I did not take too many pictures. The top was covered with a fresh layer of snow.

A view of Mount Lady Macdonald and Cascade Mountain in the background.
About 8 hours later, we were back to the car.
